9/18/15 Champions League R1 Results, Chelsea-Arsenal Sat, Butler Ties IU, US Names Prelim Team

So its back to the normal schedules in Europe this weekend after some compelling Champions League Round 1 games this past week.  Chelsea vs Arsenal leads to pack on Sat at 7:45 am on NBCSN as Arsene Wenger looks for his first win vs nemeses Mourinho and Chelsea.  Defending champion’s Chelsea stand just 2 points away from 18th place and the relegation zone 3 games into the season while Leicester City has surprisingly jumped to 2nd – I’ll be watching NBC extra this Sat as they take on US International Geoff Cameron and the Potters of Stoke City Sat at 10 am.  US Backup keeper Timmy Howard and Everton have climbed to 7th in the table as they face Swansea at Goodison park at 10 am on Sat on NBCSN.

Interesting results in the Round 1 games of Group play in Champions League this week as all the England teams except Chelsea lost their openers. Especially shocking was Man City allowing last season’s finalist Juventus and goalkeeper extraordinaire Gigi Buffon to come from behind and score 2 late goals to beat them at home.  Round 2 action in 10 days see schedule below.

The US Men have named their preliminary squad for the Title bout with Mexico, Oct 10 – no surprises on the roster though it is good to see crazy haired Kyle Beckerman and MLS leading assist man Lee Nguyen back on the rosters. Meanwhile the US ladies continue to pound everyone they play – Carli Lloyd scored the hat-trick against Haiti in the 6-0 win – they play again Sunday at 2:30 on ESPN 2.

Locally Butler and former Carmel High keeper Eric Dick had 5 fabulous saves in the 2nd half and overtime as the Dogs tied #22 Indiana U 2-2 Wed night as a packed house watched at the Butler bowl.  Butler opens Big East league play next Sat vs ranked Villanova. IU faces Rutgers Sunday on the Big 10 Network at 3 pm.  Right after that its over to ESPN Sunday 5 pm for Portland vs the New York Red Bulls in Portland.  The Timbers always pack the house and the buzzing of the Chainsaw cutting the huge log on the sidelines after goals is among the greatest spectacles in Soccer.  The Indy 11 also return this Saturday night vs Edmonton FC 7:30 pm at the Mike and on TV – Ch 8.

9/16/15 Champions League Wed 2:45 pm, Butler Hosts Indiana U at 7:30 pm

Sorry Soccer Fans – got bogged down at work – and forgot to grab stories till late last night while watching the Highlights show of Champions League late last night.  First for those new to this Blog – this is Champions League – why do we care – because these are THE BEST TEAMS and PLAYERS IN THE WORLD.  Champions League represents the best teams in the best leagues in Europe. We are currently at the Group Stages with 32 teams vying to win their group or finish 2nd and advance on to the knockout stage (Sweet 16).  Each team will play home and away against the other 3 teams in their group with the top 2 teams in each group advancing.

The top teams in the World – Barcelona, Juventus, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSG, Chelsea, Man United and City, Athletico are generally the teams that go thru – but the group stages can bring us some wonderful upsets especially at home – see PSV of the Dutch league beating Man U yesterday. Its usually high drama and fantastic crowds for these fixtures (games) and the sound of the Champions League anthem alone can get the hair on the back of most European soccer fans to stand on end.  Now games are Tues/Wed every few weeks at 2:45 pm and sometimes Noon across a multitude of Fox Sports and ESPN 2 and 3 channels –  Can you say Late Lunch?  I can usually do a Wed late lunch for either the 1st half or 2nd half if interested in joining. Otherwise its sneak on the computers, cell phones or set those DVRs to record.  Fox Soccer Channel – often does its version of NFL Red Zone – where it shows all the goals and bouncing around all the games to show the best action.  The Champions League Highlight show 1 hour right now – usually comes on around 9 or 10 pm on Fox Soccer Channel or closer to midnight on Fox Sports 1 or 2 – check your listings.  Also ESPN FC often does a nice 30 minute show after the games sometime – again check the listings.  Champions League is the something to behold – start watching now and you’ll be hooked for the Knockout Stage.

I have also listed in the Games to Watch – the Europa League games – these are for the teams that got knocked out early of the Champions League competition or didn’t qualify.  Still some great games amongst the 4th, 5th, 6th teams in their respective leagues.  Also I have listed the US teams which play in Concacaff Champions League representing North and Central American teams.

Finally don’t forget the big IU vs Butler game tonite at the Butler Bowl – tickets are $10 at the door – come see if former Carmel High keeper Eric Dick and the Bulldogs can keep their streak of no losses alive vs #17 ranked Indiana University.

9/10/15 US Pounded by Brazil, EPL big games, Indy 11 Win, Champions League is back, IU @ Butler Wed Night

ell the German (read our National Team “ahem” Manager) is nothing if not consistent.  In this case consistently bad.  He continues to try new things – trying I guess to find the right combinations this time against a much better Brazil team that just destroyed us.  Their speed on the flanks time and time again exposed the back 4 – another new back 4 combination by the way.  And when they weren’t destroying the outside backs they just dribbled right thru the middle leaving Bradley, Jones and Bedoya in their wake.  Now Bedoya playing protector of the back 4 was comical and had the natural winger who plays wing in France spinning like a top.  Jones after looking so strong on Friday night, looked exhausted and slow as he tried in vain to keep up with the Brazilian speed and flare in the middle.  (Who knows the German probably had the team running a marathon the night before the game – you know he likes to pound in fitness during these international breaks) .  The Defense was a nightmare – he needs to pick 2 maybe 3 central defenders and stick with them.  So they can begin to learn to read off one another.  This partnership is among the toughest on the field to build and constantly switching guys every half of every game – is OBVIOUSLY not working.  For me a back 4 of Fabian Johnson, Geoff Cameron, Matt Besler, and either DaMarcus Beasley or Greg Garza is probably the best line-up against Mexico with either Danny Williams or protecting the back 4.  Either Way its going to be make or break time come October 10 vs Mexico.

The EPL and the European leagues are back at full speed this weekend with some great games in the EPL including Liverpool vs Man U (and newly signed keeper De Gea) on Saturday at 12:30 on NBC, Everton and Chelsea (without Courtious) on Saturday 7:30 on NBCSN, and Arsenal vs US Center Back Geoff Cameron and Stoke City at 10 am Sat on USA Network.  In Spain Atletico Madrid battles Barcelona Sat 2:30 pm on beIN sports, while Italy has the Milan Derby with AC vs Inter Sunday 2:45 pm.

Champions League is back Tues/Wed with group Stage Battles between Man United and PSV on Fox Sports 1 and Man City hosting Juventus on Fox Sports 2 Tues @ 2:45 pm.  Wednesday has Roma vs Barcelona on FS1 and Dinamo Z vs Arsenal on FS2 @ 2:45 pm.

Locally the Indy 11 – fresh off their big 3-0 win last weekend are on the road Sat night at San Antonio at 8:30 pm on ESPN 3 before returning home for Octoberfest vs FC Edmonton Sept 19th.  And undefeated Butler, with former Carmel GK Eric Dick between the posts, will host #17 Ranked Indiana next Wed night, Sept 16 at the Butler Bowl at 7:30 pm.  Tickets are just $7 ahead of time or $10 at the gate.

9/8/15 USA vs Brazil tonite – ESPN 8:15 pm!!

Sure was a nice game on Friday night.  Fantastic to have Jones back in the midfield – he is a world class player.  Also loved Tim Ream on the left and Cameron on the right.  A good defensive effort for a change – still not sure on Alvarado a few times out of spot. I thought Besler looked great on the left inside after halftime – a bunch of clearances and the last second a few covers of a still questionable Alvarado. (man does this guy and Chandler have pics on the German or what?) I just don’t see what Klinsy does on those guys.  I thought Zardes was spectacular – man of the match spectacular.  Also Mix played very well in 2nd half in the middle. Good high pressure.  Of course nice to have Altidore back to his normal self!!

Can’t Wait for tonite!!

9/3/15 USA vs Peru Fri Night 7 pm/US vs Brazil Tues 8 pm, Euro Qualifying Today-Tues, Indy 11 home Sat night

So the US Men’s team heads into the international break (mean’s no league play this weekend for European teams) with a match-up with a solid Peru team on Friday night at 7 pm on Fox Sports 1.  Peru finished 3rd behind just Argentina and Chile in the Copa America tourney this summer.  The US will be looking to shore up the defense after multiple breakdowns in the 4th place finish in the Gold Cup this summer.  The US will be without Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey who will join the team on Monday in time for the Brazil game on Tuesday night – 8 pm on ESPN.  I am hoping to see the only American field player in the EPL Geoff Cameron back in the mix at either center back or more probably right back along with hopefully Omar Gonzalez in the middle.  The next 2 games should provide a solid battleground for US players to prove their worth before the Winner Take All Game of the Century vs Mexico Sat Night, Oct. 10th.

European Qualifying is back this weekend with multiple games starting Thursday and going thru Tuesday.  Each team will play 2 games as they continue qualifications for next Summer’s showcase Euro’s 2016 in France.  (See below for previews and full TV games schedules).  MLS finished up another Rivalry weekend with the New York Red Bulls and Seattle both winning home games to solidify their positions in the eastern and western conferences respectively.   Look for the Columbus Crew in a rare National TV appearance this Sunday on FS1 at 7 pm vs Carmel High Grad Matt Hedges and Dallas – many have Columbus in their Top 3 of the league now after moving into 2nd place in the Eastern Conference on Sunday.

Back to local soccer- the #2 ranked Carmel High Girls won 1 and tied 1 this weekend at the Carmel Invite – including a hard fought 0-0 tie with former state Champ #1 ranked and #10 in the US Fishers.  The 6th ranked Carmel boys had solid road wins vs #9 Zionsville, HSE, and #12 Brebuef.  Moving to the College Scene – the Butler men with former Carmel High and Carmel Dad’s club Goalkeeper Eric Dick – had a big win last week over Big 10 foe Wisconsin 1-0, they’ll host the 18th ranked Indiana Hoosiers (get tickets now) on Wed night, Sept 16th at 7:30 pm.

8/28/15 -US Soccer 2 Big Changes for Youth Soccer, EPL Week 3 Man City Rolling, MLS Rivalry Week Seattle/Portland, NY/DC, CHS Girls Tourney, Full TV Schedule

So US Soccer has announced 2 big movements this week – Small Sided Game Adoption and a yearly calendar as opposed to school calendar for ages on travel teams.  First the move to small sided games across the age groups – this is something that I think most of Indiana has moved to at least at the travel level and one thing that I feel is hugely important. The fewer players on the field the more decisions a young player has to make – the more a player cannot hide. With 3 v 3 and 4 v 4 at the U8 levels each player has to be engaged and make lots of moves and decisions per game.  In the US we still need to worry more about player development and less about winning or losing games. Listen those of us who have coached Rec soccer have seen coaches stack the best players on one team loading the middle with the biggest and strongest kids playing them the entire game to win games and that elusive Rec Championship trophy (listen that has been the standard now for 20 years).  I ask you how many great US players has that produced?  Maybe 5, 10 (other than Goalies) that have truly played at the highest level in the world’s top leagues? Meanwhile the Dutch – 1/20th our size continue to produce some of the top players in the world.  Its about player skill development and the freedom to create, make decisions and try things out.  Well meaning commissioners and coaches think – hey lets just make our U6 league 6 v 6 so all the kids can play more. Well they can’t create and move when there are too many kids crowding the field.(Would you play 8 on 8 in basketball?)  If you have 4 on the field there should be 2 subs waiting (I prefer free flow subbing on throw-ins at all ages so you can take the tired kids out). Either way most of the time the more kids you add –  the less the players develop in games.  Another is the practice to game time ratio – many teams will play 2 weekend games but only practice once.  It should be 2 or 3 practices for every league game.  With tourneys and leagues – we all play too many games per practice time in the US. On the age moving from school calendar to yearly calendar – I only know that the rest of the entire world does it this way and that’s why the change is taking place. I do think this will obviously give clubs some growing pains in the US as kids who have been age/grade specific will be ripped away from their teams and kids they know to play with other teams that match this new guideline.  It won’t be an easy transition – but I do understand if the rest of the world does it that way, perhaps long term at least we have to adapt.  While we are on the youth Soccer Side – I refereed a bunch of youth games (U7,8) games this weekend and noticed the age old issue we have with parents on the side line trying to help their young kids play.  Here’s another point from former US National Team player and World Cup Winner and soccer mom  Please Let the Coaches Coach.

Ok so moving on to professional soccer now the EPL plays on NBC this Saturday 12:30 with US Keeper Timmy Howard backstopping the Toffies in their heated matchup with Tottenham, meanwhile in Germany Bayern Munich takes on Bayern Leverkusen at 12:30 Sat on Fox Sports 2.  Its Rivalry Weekend in MLS – as Portland travels to Seattle on ESPN Sunday at 5 pm, and the top 2 teams in the Eastern Conference the New York Red Bulls face off with DC United at 7 pm on Fox Sports 1.  Finally Thurs-Tues of next week the international break is upon us (Read no EPL or Foreign league Games) for European Qualifying and plenty of friendlies including the US vs Peru Friday night.  (See the full schedule below).

The Girls CHS team will be hosting an invitational at Murray stadium hosting 3 of the top 10 teams in the state.  Carmel will play Fishers at 9 am and Cathedral at 7 pm at Murray Stadium.  JV with our own Coach Carla Baker will play Fishers 10:30 am and Cathedral at 5 pm on the Football practice Fields behind the Football Stadium.

8/21/15 EPL Wk 3, Spanish and Italian leagues start, High School season is back, Indy 11 win- Full TV game Listings

So with the Spanish League (La Liga) and the Italian Serie A back in play this weekend all of the major soccer leagues across the world are back on line including local colleges and high school.  See previews below for the Serie A – will my precious Juventus win the league for a 5th straight time despite their shipping out Pirlo, Tevez and lots of other talent? (Buffon still minds the net).  Will the Milans Inter or AC come back to relevance in a league they have dominated over the years?  In Spain the La Liga has the usual suspects of Real Madrid and Barcelona battling at the top with Athletico, Valencia, and perhaps Sevilla battling for Champion’s League spots.  The season kicks off Saturday but TV coverage starts Sunday as Athletico travels to Barcelona at 12:30 on beIN Sports.

The EPL is back for week 3 with a doozy of a game on Monday 3 pm as undefeated Liverpool travel to Arsenal on NBCSN.  US Keeper Brad Guzan and Aston Villa face Crystal Palace Sat morning at 10 am on USA Network, while fellow keeper Tim Howard and Everton face Tottenham on NBCSN on Sunday at 10 am.

High School soccer has returned in Indy with multiple teams on the North side of Indy ranked – on the Girls Side its Fishers #1, Carmel #2, and Noblesville #3 while Brebeuf, Cathedral, Hamilton Southeastern and Guerin Catholic are all top 10.  On the boys side the top 10 includes Zionsville at #3, Carmel at #6, Fisher’s #9, and Guerin Catholic #10.  Carmel Girls have a 2 week home streak with games against Guerin 8/22, Fishers 8/29, Cathedral 8/29, and Pike 9/2. Catch the Carmel Invitational next weekend at Murray Stadium as 4 of the top 10 Girl’s teams in the state will play on Saturday 8/29.  The Carmel boys are home 8/25 vs Ben Davis and again 9/3.  Guerin Catholic boys has a string of 3 home games next week 8/25, 8/29 and 9/1.

Finally, congrats to the Indy 11 for their big win over Tampa Bay 2-0 on Wednesday night, it was actually the first win I have witnessed in person for our Indy 11.  In case you haven’t been – here is quick goal video from the BYB section behind the goal – the only place to take in a soccer game in my opinion.  The 11 move into a tie for 8th and take off on a 3 game road streak starting with Atlanta this Saturday night – catch the game on ESPN3 or these watch party locations.

The US netminder pitched a pair of shutouts against Palace last season, but Villa failed to win the home game. Guzan has three clean sheet victories in his last five EPL road games, and his 1-0 win there last season snappe a Villas win drought at Selhurst Park that dated back to 1980.

Alfredo Morales – Ingolstadt vs. Borussia Dortmund (Sunday, 9:30 am on Fox Sports 1)

Having thoroughly enjoyed Ingolstadt’s Bundesliga coming out party away from home last week, Morales & Co. bring the show home for the fans. Both the midfielder and his club will be getting their first look at Dortmund. The Audi Boys will go without key defender Danilo, while the visitors are set to arrive without someone the American ordinarily would have run up against repeatedly, midfield ace Nuri Sahin.

11:00 a.m.,             Everton vs. Manchester City               NBCSN

Tim Howard – Everton vs. Manchester City (Sunday, 11 am on NBCSN)

After shutting down one of his favorite opponents at Southampton last weekend, Howard returns home trying to regain the upper hand in a series he had traditionally dominated until recently. Despite dropping his last three clshs with the Citizens, the Toffees backstop still holds a 10-7-2 all-time edge with six clean sheets thrown in for good measure. This time, Everton must go without star defender Leighton Baines.

So the EPL finally returned this past weekend and what a weekend of play as 4 of the top 5 contenders for the title struggled with Arsenal losing at home, Chelsea tying at home, Tottenham losing and Man United barely winning.  Now which team looked the best on opening weekend?  Man City – the team many including myself were guessing might slide out of the top 4 this year –their 3-0 blasting at West Brom was impressive with YaYa Toure scoring the brace. (2 goals)  It sets up for another interesting EPL season on NBC.  I am so glad to see they added USA Network to the 10 am Sat kickoffs since some folks still don’t get NBCSN.  Huge EPL game Sunday 11 am on NBCSN as Man City host Chelsea right after the Arsenal/Crystal Palace game at 8:30 am.  Sat features American’s Timmy Howard and Everton hosting Southampton at 7:30 AM on NBCSN, and Geoff Cameron and Stoke hosting Tottenham at 10 am on NBCSN.  Also don’t forget if you miss the games you can always catch Match of the Day 1 on Saturday afternoons/eves and Match of the Day 2 on Sunday afternoons to catch a nice 20 minute synopsis of each game played set those DVRs.

So I watched way too much soccer on Sat/Sun but one thing I wanted to do was watch some EPL games on Sun AM then watch the MLS games right after to see the difference in level of play.  Honestly – while the ELP games were not the greatest on Sunday – the play was eerily similar.  Now I was watching the extremely intense NY Darby with NYCFC vs NY Red Bulls and LA vs Seattle – 2 very good MLS games – but both games had stadium atmospheres equal to or greater than the EPL games of the day.  There were maybe a few more shots in the EPL games overall but I honestly found them just as entertaining.  You Euro snobs out there –should catch an Sunday MLS game on ESPN or Fox Sports 1 you might just be surprised try the Orlando City vs Seattle game Sun 5 pm on ESPN 2 and see if Kaka (click on this link for a great video on Kaka) can will his team past Dempsey and the Sounders.

Now when it comes to atmosphere – few things beat being in the Brickyard Battalion (the standing room only section behind the goal). Though I have to say this past Sat Night was tough – Ottawa showed why they are top of the table – and honestly our Indy 11 looked like the bottom of the table on this day.  The defense really struggled giving up 4 goals – however new addition Marvin Ceballos from Guatamala really looks like he has the skills to turn things around for the 11 in the midfield.  The 5’5” #10 really showed supreme ballhanding skills and looks like he might really help us when he gets more on the same page with his teammates.  The 11 return for a midweek – home stay on Wed, Aug 19th at 7:30 vs the Tampa Bay Rowdies.  Oh and big thanks to Coach Tim for finding me a rare Indy 11/USA Bumper Sticker from last season – it now resides proudly on my new Mazda CX5 – thanks Coach!!

Don’t forget the German Bundesliga gets underway this Friday with games on Fox Sports 1, 2 and Fox Soccer, there are a bunch of American National Team players in Germany and of course Bayern Munich and Dortmann are two powerhouse Champions League contenders year in and year out.  I’ll be tuning in Saturday to see how Eric R, Alexis Lalas, Burton and the boys at Fox Soccer will handle the coverage of their new property it starts with US International Aaron Johannsson with his new club Werder Bremen vs Schalke at 9:30 am on Fox Soccer Channel.  Finally, the US Women’s World Cup Champions begin their US tour with matchups this week vs Costa Rica – Sun 1:30 on FS1 and Wed 6:30 pm on ESPN2.

8/7/15 EPL Returns, MLS Darby’s, Indy 11 Home vs Ottawa Sat Night, Soccer on TV schedule

So finally league play overseas is back as the EPL (English Premier League), and Ligue 1 (French League) kick off today.  Traditionally the EPL is seen as the top International League – seen by the most fans and the most competitive major league.  Unlike the Spanish La Liga which has 2- maybe 3 good teams (Barcelona, Real Madrid, Athletico Madrid), Italian Serie A (Jueventus, Roma, Milan), French Ligue 1 (PSG, Lyon, NICE), and German Bundesliga (Bayern Munich, Dortman) the EPL really has 6 to 8 teams vying for a top 4 (Champions League Spot) each season along with realistically 4 to 5 teams vying for the title.  I don’t have a favorite at the top as my club Fulham Football Club (the EPL team who has played the most American’s over the last decade) was relegated 2 seasons ago and plays in the 2nd division Champions Division. In general I root for the teams with American’s on them – GK Tim Howard at Everton, GK Brad Guzan at Aston Villa, Def Geoff Cameron at Stoke City and now Right back Deandre Yedlin who just joined Tottenham.  I also have buddies who live and die by Arsenal, Liverpool, and Man U so I try to watch and give them some love as well.  Looking ahead to this season – I really think Arsenal’s addition of world class GK Petre Cech will give the Gunners and manager what they need to jump to the top this season.  I think Chelsea falls back to 2nd, while Man U with Van Gaal’s 200+ million spent will keep the Reds in 3rd.  The battle for is 4th place with Man City staying pat, Southhampton taking on Europa League play, Tottenham and young striking superstar Harry Kane looking to move up one and Liverpool – ah Liverpool  – making offseason moves a plenty in an attempt to save Brendan Roger’s job at Anfield.  Right Bill?

Man United with all the changes this summer (added Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger) and the Dea Gea saga (will the GK move to Real Madrid or not?) kicks off the season at home vs Tottenham and all-star Harry Kane at 7:45 on Sat. AM on NBCSN.  EPL games will be show on USA Network now on Sat AM’s at 10 am as well as on NBC Sports Network all morning and often on NBC at 1 pm as well.   USA will start with Everton and US keeper Tim Howard vs newly promoted Watford at 10 am on Sat, while NBCSN will show Aston Villa and US goalie Brad Guzan vs newly promoted Bournemouth at 10 am.  Sunday has Arsenal vs West Ham at 8:30 am and Liverpool hosting US international Geoff Cameron and Stoke City at 11 am on NBCSN.

MLS has added more strength as Mexican International 26 year old superstar Dos Santos has joined LA Galaxy and scored in his first game – the Galaxy will host a reeling Seattle Sounders team with Clint Dempsey that has lost 7 of their last 8 on Sunday at 4 pm on ESPN.  The New York Darby is also Sunday at 7 pm on Fox Sports 1 as the NY Red Bulls with Bradley Wright-Phillips and his younger brother Shaun hosting NYCFC and Frank Lampard, Andrea Pirlo and David Villa.

Tuesday the winner of Champions League-Barcelona will face the winner of Europa League fellow Spanish side Sevilla at 2:30 on Fox Sports 1 with both teams expected to be at full strength (read Messi, Neymar and Suerez should be playing.)

Finally as club and high school soccer are getting back underway here in Indy, the Indy 11 will host Ottawa Sat night at 7:30 at home at the Mike.  Its Family Pack night at the Mike with 4 tix, hot dogs, sodas and chips for just $79 or $10 per ticket normal.

So the MLS Allstar Game was quite entertaining – with MLS winning a close one over Tottenham Hotspur 2-1.  The thought here is world class striker Harry Kane will most likely start right where we took off last season and score plenty of goals in the EPL this season.  He was remarkable up front and only spectacular saves by the the MLS greatest ever keeper – Nick Rimando kept the MLS All Stars in front.  Overall the site of Kaka feeding David Villa on a goal was subline and to see the US All Stars hang even with one of the top 20 club teams in the world 1 week prior to season is not bad.  Lots of MLS games on the docket this weekend including Chicago hosting Dallas and former CHS and Carmel Dad’s Club MLS/Allstar Matt Hodges Sunday night at 7 pm on Fox Sports 1.   Portland host San Jose at 5 pm on ESPN – and if you have never watched a Portland Timbers game – WATCH – one of the best 3 atmosphere’s in the US for soccer along with Seattle and KC.
