7/31/15 Indy 11 Host Atlanta 7:30 on TV 8 Sat, MLS All-Stars beat Tottenham, Arsenal vs Chelsea in Community Shield Sun, Full Soccer TV Listings

So the MLS Allstar Game was quite entertaining – with MLS winning a close one over Tottenham Hotspur 2-1.  The thought here is world class striker Harry Kane will most likely start right where we took off last season and score plenty of goals in the EPL this season.  He was remarkable up front and only spectacular saves by the the MLS greatest ever keeper – Nick Rimando kept the MLS All Stars in front.  Overall the site of Kaka feeding David Villa on a goal was subline and to see the US All Stars hang even with one of the top 20 club teams in the world 1 week prior to season is not bad.  Lots of MLS games on the docket this weekend including Chicago hosting Dallas and former CHS and Carmel Dad’s Club MLS/Allstar Matt Hodges Sunday night at 7 pm on Fox Sports 1.   Portland host San Jose at 5 pm on ESPN – and if you have never watched a Portland Timbers game – WATCH – one of the best 3 atmosphere’s in the US for soccer along with Seattle and KC.

The 11 are back Sat Night, July 31 against Atlanta at 7:30 pm – watch on TV 8 or get on down to the Mike for just $10 tickets.  The English Premier League and German Bundesliga start their regular seasons next weekend and the weekend after but they and the French all have Super Cup action this Sat/Sun.  Fox Sports starts officially broadcasting their full season of German Bundesliga action on Sat 2:30 pm with Wolfsburg vs Bayern Munchen on Fox Soccer Channel.  The French Ligue 1 offer PSG vs Olympique Lyon at 3 pm on Sat on Be In Sports while Arsenal and Chelsea will battle for England’s Community Shield Sunday morning at 10 am on Fox Sport 1.   The defending EPL champs Chelsea will face their former allstar keeper Peter Cech as he minds the nets for FA Cup Champions Arsenal.  Can Venger finally take one from his nemeses Jose Mourino?

7/29/15 MLS Allstar Game Tonite on Fox Sports 1, Indy 11 Home Sat, US 4th in Confed Cup, Games on TV

Really Excited About Wed (Tonite’s) MLS Allstar Game vs Tottenham on Fox Sports 1.  With the additions of Pirlo and Kaka. And Giovincho and Gerrard and Lampard and Dos Santos – MLS is really really getting some recognizable names that fans should be excited to see.  I turned in for the 5-3 barn burner between Orlando and NY City FC at Yankee Stadium and was thrilled to see a packed house watching Pirlo, David Villa and Kaka affect a game that was a goalkeepers finger from being tied at 4-4 in injury time.  MLS is coming on strong and it should be cool to see how they face against a top 6 EPL Team in Tottenham.  I think they beat them.

Speaking of beating them – that’s something the Indy 11 may do to the fall’s top team the NY Cosmos – but they don’t lose to them either. I took in the Sat night affair from a late arriving PACKED HOUSE in the BYB Section at the Mike and our Boys in Blue looked good.  Listen NY City’s payroll probably doubles ours and our ability to continue to play them straight up each game should be applauded.  The 11 are back Sat Night, July 31 against Atlanta at 7:30 pm – watch on TV 8 or get on down to the Mike for just $10 tickets.

Not sure there is much to say about the USMNT effort on Sunday – we were outplayed from wire to wire again – and only the superheriocs of Goalie Brad Guzan kept us in the game. A real shame he didn’t get the win in the shootout but honestly Panama without their best player beat us like a drum and outshot us like 15-5.  With Mexico’s thrashing of Panama that sets up the winner take all showdown on Oct 9th  9 pm at the Rose Bowl for a Confederations Cup birth in 2017 in Russia.  The US probably caught a break with the Mexico head coach getting fired this week after punching a reporter – never a dull moment in the Concacaf Region Baby.

Enjoy the continued televised action of the ICC Cup this week and don’t forget Sunday the EPL gets started with the Community Shield Chelsea vs Arsenal on Fox Sports 1 at 10 am and the EPL Season kicks off next weekend Aug 8, while MLS and NASL continue here in the states.

7/24/15 US loses in Gold Cup Semis-3rd place game Sat 4 pm, MLS-Pirlo and Lampard to start for NYFC Sun 2 pm, Indy 11 host Cosmos Sat Night, TV games this Week

So I just wasn’t ready to write anything the day after the biggest USMNT Loss in 10+ years.  Juergen Klinsmann (we’ll call him –“The German”) pointed to the Gold Cup as the team’s most important competition this year and the USA went out and played crap for the past 2 weeks and found a way to lose in the semi-final round for the first time in 20+ years.  Listen I was ok with THE GERMAN trying out some of the younger players in the huge friendly games over the past few months and I was ok with bringing some of them to the Gold Cup.  I love Zardes, I think Yedlin is a super talented kid who can affect a game – although again The German is not using him at the right back spot where he will play in Europe this fall.  I was even ok with the team playing poorly in the first few group games.  But the German continues to show he has NO CLUE what defense is.  His insistence on shoehorning the pair of 22 year old center backs Alverada and Brooks together despite the fact they have played HORRIBLE together in EVERY game they have played was just idiotic and it ended up costing the US this game.  Listen I agree that GK Brad Guzan did not play his best game – he had actually saved this US team all tourney long – but it was Brooks who again did not cover the big forward and allowed him a free header to score the first goal.  The German’s refusal to actually bring and play our best defenders  Geoff Cameron on the Right, Gonzalez and Tim Ream in the middle, and on the left has cost him this Gold Cup Championship.

Now do I think Klinsmann should be fired? No – listen he gambled on the youth that he see’s taking center stage at Russia 2018 and they weren’t ready.  I am super frustrated that he continues to flip the lineups, formations and move guys all over the field – not allowing them to build on playing time together in a formation that they can get comfortable with.  Now part of that was not having Altidore healthy again (I think Klinsmann is learning he can’t count on Altidore and he needs to find/develop someone else for WC Russia 2018.  I love the young forward Morris but he was hurt, I would have like to have seen some younger forwards – Bobby Wood maybe or Julian Green.  I am ok with the experimenting up front but for the friendlies in September and the HUGE Showdown winner goes to the Confederation Cup game on Oct 9 – he must play his best 4 defenders NOW!!

Those of you who watched the Mexico vs Panama game after the US debacle (see video)- How about we kick the Panamanians out of CONCACAF for acting like Savages on the Field – attacking the REF  – there should have been arrests last night.  THIS IS NOT EUROPE OR SOUTH AMERICA – WE Do not attack our refs like Savages.  Did Mexico get 2 questionable calls in this tourney -YES.  But that first hand ball call WAS A HANDBALL.  Sorry Panama –  you outplayed a very poor Mexican team on the night with 10 men and should have won the game.  But your captain fell on the ball with his hand in the 88th minute.  Later your same captain and another defender smashed a Mexican forward in the box to earn the 2nd PK.  The bottom line is soccer is not always fair.  But the US Ref who has called World Cup games did not call that bad a game – Panama was simply unlucky.  It was not the reffing that should questioned – it’s the Panamanian team and delegation for acting like absolute savages during and after the game.  I know they felt cheated but the truth is they should be kicked out of the 3rd place game for lack of respect.  Oh and the security not being prepared for the overwhelming Mexican crowd was also a mistake. Listen I have been at multiple US vs Mexico games and the Mexico crowds can be amongst the dirtiest and most disrespectful I have ever seen.  Security simply should have been much, much more involved both on the field, around the field and in the stands.  Honestly they should treat them like European games and put cops down the rows in between the sections – it was the only way US fans were safe at 2 of the Gold Cup US vs Mexico games I attended.  Anyway it will be interesting to see how the US approaches the 3rd place game on Saturday – 4 pm on Fox Sports 1 or 2?  Then on Sunday 7:30 pm on Fox Sports 1 to see who wins the Mexico vs Jamaica final (the winner plays the US on Oct 9 in a winner goes to the Confed Cup game probably at the Rose Bowl) – a Mexico win would set up a high pressure high intensity game that would make for great soccer theatre but we will see.

Back to local soccer – the Indy 11 are back on the pitch Saturday night at the Mike for Christmas in July vs the NY Cosmos and Spanish soccer legend Raul, tickets just $10, the first 5,000 fans get Santa Zeke Bobbleheads and of course all kinds of cool promotions going on.  Meanwhile good luck to the FC Pride U14 Girls and coach Matt Blackbourne as they have advanced to the Semi-Finals at the National Championships this weekend. 7/14/15 US ties Panama moves to Quarterfinals of Gold Cup Sat 5 pm, Indy 11 on roll

So this US Team has been outshot 51 – 20 in their 3 Gold Cup so far – granted they have 2 1 goal wins and a draw but still this is not progress by this US team.  What happened to we are going to control the pace and impose our will on CONCACAF competition.  The US again showed last night that without their creative playmaker and shotmaker in forward Clint Dempsey they absolutely lack any ability to get quality shots on goal.  Defensively, well Jurgen is one stubborn guy – but we US fans know this.  When he think he see’s something (Timmy Chandler should be a good right back hell he starts in the Bundesliga) but his body of work for the US has been subpar at best.   Alvarado in the middle – again I like him and I think he’s going to be a fine right back someday – but right now with him and Chandler on the same right side its like a big 50 yard whole just begging to be attacked with little to no resistance.  Please Jurgen put Gonzales back in the middle with someone (Brooks is ok I guess) but please please please – put someone else on the right.  If you are going to give someone experience why not Yedlin – (he’s not a winger – HE CAN’T Dribble or pass really) – but he might turn out to be a fine right back someday. The truth is Geoff Cameron is the US Best and only legit right back right now.  He has to do something – goalie Brad Guzan has saved our buts for 3 games now but eventually he’s going to let one in and we are going to lose!!  I thought Bedoya really showed his quality last night though he was noticeably still recovering from being out a while.  Zardes continues to be the most exciting new player we have- I love him up top and can only think the sky is the limit with this guy.  Will be interesting to see if Johannson can replace Altidore up top over the next few games – not feeling great with old school MLS lifers Gordon and Wondo.  So the good news is the US fans are now watching – 2.3 million watched a sold out incredibly intense atmosphere at Sporting KC park – a 100% Pro US Crowd with Sam’s Army and the American Outlaws in full voice – a scene that harkens the fever pitch that only Columbus and Seattle have matched before.  This summer of soccer with the US ladies winning the World Cup, a fantastic Copa America, MLS with more recognizable stars, the ICC starting and now The Gold Cup gives the US team a chance to really solidify this summer as a watershed time for soccer in the US.  The question is can they step up their play and impress with everyone now watching?

7/13/15 Indy 11 Win, USMNT Face Panama tonite 9:30 on FS1

What a nice run the Indy 11 are on after a huge win against 3rd place Carolina Sat Night at The Mike 2-1.  The team is on a  5 game non-losing streak and now stands in a tie for 1st in the fall season and just 1 pt out of 3rd overall with 4 wins, 5 draws and 3 losses for 17 pts.  Hopefully the crowds will stay strong and we’ll pack the Mike – as the Indy 11 are playing some of the best soccer in their 2nd year here.

The US National Team won Friday night vs Haiti 1-0 and that’s about all you can say.  Now there is something to winning when you play poorly – just ask Mexico – who stands at 2nd in their own group. But obviously the US still has a ways to go before they find their stride in this Gold Cup.  I thought Zardes had a fantastic 45 minutes replacing a very poor Altidore up front – amazing how having a forward who actually runs and hustles can make a difference. I did think the defense was a little stronger with 3 new starters in the back.  The US is thru as the top team in the group so it will be interesting to see what changes the German makes for tonight’s 9:30 game on Fox Sports 1 vs a Panama team that needs a win.

Indy’s Lauren Holiday (Cheney) retires from USWNT a Champion after decade of dedication

BY GRANT WAHLTwitter EmailPosted: Wed Jul. 8, 2015

LOS ANGELES — Lauren Holiday has always been a player’s player for the U.S. national team, blessed with ball skills and vision and scoring instincts, and always the definition of the term classy. So perhaps it wasn’t surprising that she announced her international retirement here on Tuesday with the same amount of class, just two days after she had scored in the U.S.’s 5-2 win over Japan in the World Cup final.“To be honest, this isn’t something that happened overnight,” said Holiday, 27, who shed tears as she spoke, thought not, she said, tears of sadness. “This has been something I’ve prayed about for a couple years now. But my main goal was to win an NWSL championship and a World Cup, and I did it.”“I know this is where I was supposed to be for so many years, and I know that I gave my all to soccer, to the sport, to this team,” she continued. “And I’m excited for a new chapter of my life. I feel like this team isn’t my identity, it’s my choice. I think there’s power in making a choice. I chose this team for 10 years, and now I’m going to choose my family.”Holiday, who said she’s hoping to start a family at some point, said she’ll continue playing with her club team in Kansas City this year. “I’m going back to Kansas City for the rest of this season,” she said. “I just have so much respect for the organization, and I truly want the NWSL to succeed.”It’s expected that Holiday will participate in the 10-game victory tour for the U.S. national team as well. She said both her club and national team were aware of her decision before she announced it on Tuesday in response to questions from reporters. Her resume with the national team is an impressive one: One World Cup title, two Olympic gold medals, 130 caps and 24 goals. What’s more, Holiday’s versatility was remarkable. She started her U.S. career as a forward but also played wide roles and eventually moved to a deep-lying playmaker position. Rarely did she ever get to play at the No. 10 spot, her natural position.“She’s such a good soccer player, and she’s been asked to play in so many positions that weren’t necessarily her true position, but she’s still world-class at all those positions,” said Becky Sauerbrunn, Holiday’s teammate for club and country. “I think it takes a special person and a special soccer player to be able to do that. Just what she’s done for this team, she’s irreplaceable. “I was secretly hoping she wasn’t going to retire. In my heart of hearts, I really hope that she does continue. But she’s sacrificed so much for this team, and she’s been on this team for so long, that I think she’s ready to kind of start the next chapter in her life. I’m proud of her for wanting to do that, and I wish her the utmost happiness. But I’m going to miss the hell out of her.”On a U.S. team with players who are 40 (Christie Rampone), 38 (Shannon Boxx) and 35 (Abby Wambach), it may be surprising that the first post-World Cup retirement would be by the 27-year-old Holiday. But Holiday’s teammates have been aware for some time that she was considering retirement. Her family is in good shape financially, and from a competitive perspective she has achieved what she set out to do.Holiday smiled through her tears when asked if she felt she was leaving the U.S. central midfield in good hands. “For sure,” she said. “I think the world of Morgan Brian. Obviously, Carli [Lloyd] is phenomenal. I’ve played with her for so many years, and she’s just an incredible talent. I think you guys are going to see a star in Morgan Brian. She’s unbelievable. She’s mature beyond her years on the field and sophisticated. I think you just saw a glimpse of what she can bring to a team. So I’m excited to see her grow the next four years.”Holiday wasn’t always the most vocal of the U.S. players in the media, but she had an important role inside the team. It was Holiday who came up with the idea for the #SheBelieves campaign connecting the U.S. team to communities around the country. And Sauerbrunn said Holiday has a big influence speaking up for lesser-known players on both their club team and the national team.“What she does for us is very subtle, and it can be very quiet,” Sauerbrunn said. “And I think a lot of things go on behind the scenes that people don’t realize how important she is to this team in what she brings. She’s kind of like Robin Hood in a way, because she fights for the players. When it comes down to little things like contracts or ‘Can we get a bus set up for a trip?’ or something like that, she’s the one that’s fighting for us. And it goes a long way.”Before the World Cup final, Sauerbrunn said, the players spoke to each other and said this was probably going to be the last time these 23 U.S. players would be in the same room together getting ready to play a competitive game for the national team.“So you kind of take that and try to cherish it,” Sauerbrunn said. “Because it is a very rare thing that we accomplished together. It’s sad that we’re kind of all these moving parts that are going to be separated now. So absolutely, we cherish these moments.”Indeed, emotions were high in this hotel ballroom as the news spread that Holiday had announced that her time with the national team is coming to an end. But she also wanted to emphasize that she was looking forward to the next chapter of her life, one that will likely still include soccer to some degree. WATCH: President Obama calls the victorious USWNTHoliday said that future might involve coaching. “Absolutely,” she said. “Whatever I can do to help. Whatever I can do to continue having women’s soccer and sports in America continue to grow, I will do. My passion is people and helping people.”That passion has come through loud and clear in Holiday’s exemplary national team career. And now she’s leaving on top. She’s a World Cup champion.

Position fits for USMNT players in flux: Yedlin, Johnson, Zardes, Evans

ESPN FC – Insider – United States manager Jurgen Klinsmann emphasized experience when naming his 2015 Gold Cup team. The 23-man roster consists of 17 players from the 2014 World Cup squad (that’s down to 16 with Brad Davis out with injury), and the manager sees this as a competitive advantage because the players not only understand what Klinsmann expects of them but also are cognizant of their roles within the team. However, a handful of players have yet to establish one clear position on the national team, whether that’s due to positional need, opponent matchup or player strengths and weaknesses. Versatile players like DeAndre Yedlin, Fabian Johnson, Gyasi Zardes and Brad Evans are able to play multiple positions, and while each contributed to the team’s 2-1 victory over Honduras in the Gold Cup opener, it is unclear whether any of them will continue playing in the same spot by the end of the summer. Here is a look at where each of these four players fits best within the USMNT, based on their individual strengths and weaknesses along with team and positional needs.

DeAndre Yedlin

Positions: Right back, right midfield

Yedlin established a reputation as an effective, athletic right back during the 2014 World Cup. However, the Tottenham defender moved into a right midfield position for the U.S. in the friendlies leading up to the Gold Cup.Yedlin is solid defensively and has been averaging 2.0 tackles and 2.0 interceptions per 90 minutes while appearing in all eight 2015 U.S. friendlies. The 22-year-old has especially improved in reading the opponent’s passes and stepping in to break up plays, but equally important is that he has the speed to recover from positional mistakes he makes on the back line. While Yedlin has been sound defensively, his transition into midfield has not particularly improved his attacking presence. In the opening 2015 Gold Cup game against Honduras, Yedlin recorded 21 total touches in the attacking half. Meanwhile, right back Timmy Chandler recorded 22 attacking-half touches playing behind Yedlin. Chandler’s overlapping presence stems from Klinsmann’s preference for outside backs with pace who can get involved in the attack; however, this overlapping movement limits Yedlin’s effectiveness as a midfielder who likes to get in wide positions and provide the same attacking traits as the defender playing behind him. While Yedlin is capable of handling either role, he would need to improve his decision-making and ability to create chances from both central and wide positions in order to be a more dynamic attacking midfield threat at the international level. While affirming Yedlin’s status as a right back would put him in a fierce competition with Chandler for the starting job, Yedlin is ultimately a more secure defensive option in that role, and with an improved attacking game he is capable of ultimately getting to the top of the depth chart at that position.

Best fit: Right back

Fabian Johnson

Positions: Right back, left back, left midfield

There are two tactical decisions to make with Johnson. The first decision is whether he is better on the left or the right side of the field, and the second is whether he is better served as a defender or a midfielder.Johnson is currently playing at left back for the U.S. in the Gold Cup, which differs from his spending the entire 2014 World Cup as the team’s incumbent right back. Johnson, who is competent with both feet, spent the 2014-15 Bundesliga season at left midfield, and his 92.5 percent pass completion rate while playing as a left back in the 2015 U.S. friendlies trumps his 76.7 percent completion rate from the 2014 World Cup. This ability to keep possession implies that he reads the game better from the left side of the field.Next, is he better served as a defender or midfielder with the U.S.? Johnson does not excel in terms of defensive statistics — he recorded just two tackles and two interceptions in his four 2015 friendly appearances — yet he does a good job of tracking opponent runs and closing down space to deny opposing crosses. Meanwhile, this season Johnson ranked third on Borussia Monchengladbach with four assists as a left midfielder, and through his four appearances in eight 2015 U.S. friendlies, he ranks fourth on the team with 26.7 attacking-half touches per 90 minutes (minimum three appearances). These numbers suggest that Johnson can play an even bigger role in the U.S. attack if he starts higher up the field and would be more productive playing in a left midfield role.Additionally, left midfield is a position that has no inherent starting player in the U.S. lineup. This means Johnson’s ability to get forward while also providing defensive coverage not only gives him an edge over natural left midfielders like Graham Zusi but also over more central-based players like Mix Diskerud, who would need to be converted to that position. In terms of team impact, Johnson’s progression to a left midfield role will depend on the development of players like Brek Shea and Greg Garza at left back, though that is somewhat mitigated by Johnson’s having proved that he can provide defensive support when necessary for any player behind him.

Best fit: Left midfield

Gyasi Zardes

Positions: Wide midfield (winger), forward

Zardes earned his place on the U.S. team by scoring 16 domestic goals in the 2014 MLS season. The 23-year-old attacker broke out while playing as a forward for the Los Angeles Galaxy and is currently adjusting to a wide midfield role with the U.S.

Zardes plays well in midfield, and the fact that he records 34 percent of his touches in the defensive half of the field suggests that he can cover ground in both the attacking and defensive halves as well as across the field (he’s played on both the right and left sides for the U.S.). However, Zardes’ athleticism is better positioned directly against the opponent’s back line, where he can utilize his quick first step and improved attacking instincts to make penetrating runs behind central defenders.

Instead of competing for a forward position, Zardes is still adjusting to the nuances of playing as a wide midfielder at the international level. While Zardes brings speed along the wing, he was also dispossessed a team-high 12 times in his eight 2015 U.S. friendly appearances and completed just one of his seven cross attempts in that time. Overall, it is not likely that Zardes could immediately replicate his 2014 MLS form as a forward at the international level; however, the learning curve at both positions suggests that he is better off competing for playing time as one of the strikers in the U.S. player pool. And while Zardes would initially have a tough time taking playing time away from incumbent strikers Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore, the Galaxy forward ultimately brings more speed to the front line than experienced veteran Chris Wondolowski and has proved more explosive in and around the penalty area than Aron Johannsson.

Best fit: Forward

Brad Evans

Positions: Right back, center back

Evans cemented his role as a center back with the Seattle Sounders in 2015 and currently ranks third on the team with 28 tackles and second with 40 interceptions. However, he is still regarded as a right back at the international level, and his ability to track opposing runs and keep opponents in front of him is what prompted Klinsmann to use Evans as a second-half substitute for Chandler to help secure the team’s recent 2-1 victory over Honduras.Evans is averaging 1.8 tackles and 2.6 interceptions per 90 minutes as a center back with the Sounders in 2015. This is significantly better than the 1.1 tackles and 1.5 interceptions he averaged as a right back with the team in 2014 and suggests that the 30-year-old defender is better at closing down attacks in a more condensed, central area. While Evans might need a full MLS season to become fully comfortable as a center back, his recent lack of playing time as a right back for the U.S. insinuates that he could be more valuable competing for one of the team’s center back positions. Evans made just two appearances in the eight 2015 U.S. friendlies leading to the Gold Cup, and while he provided an assist in his 54 total minutes, Evans is naturally a more conservative defender who thrives when his primary objective is to clear away dangerous chances. These attributes coupled with Evan’s veteran presence would provide a solid depth option for a central defense position that has been a question mark for the United States since the 2014 World Cup.

Best fit: Center back   Adrian Melville joined

7/09/15 USMNT Gold Cup Win, Copa Wrap-up, Indy 11 back home Sat Night , Games on TV

Man 2 steps forward 1 step back.  For every great win on the road in friendlies, there is the come back to earth – the other team dominates the ball, we play defense (much worse than we EVER have in the HISTORY of US Soccer) game in tourney play.  If there is one thing Klinsmann (here forth the GERMAN) has proved its that he has NO IDEA how to nurture or coach a defense.  His selections of Timmy Chandler on the right (possibly the worse right back in the history of US soccer) and now Alverado in the middle over Gonzalez just blows the mind.  Listen I think Alvarado is a fine young prospect – and I think he’s going to be a starter on the US Backline someday.  Key word here is SOMEDAY – not TODAY.  In games that matter – Alverado should be watching from the friggin bench (I know he is now Cap Tied to the US now but they could have done that by subbing him on at halftime or playing in the next game).   Now I do think Brooks is coming along but at just 22 he needs a more experienced back line mate to tell him where to go and what to do.  The center back pairing (right now) of two 22 year olds is frightening.  I just don’t understand the GERMAN sometimes – hell Gonzales is from Dallas, Texas – he had ton’s of family there – and unless he was hurt – I do not understand not starting him in this game with either Brooks preferably or Alvarado.  Its just mindboggling how bad we were on defense last night. Thank god GK Brad Guzan was up to the test, as he had to make save after save early just to keep the US in the game.  And about that – what happened to controlling tempo and possession against teams in CONCACAF.  Someone forgot to send the note to Honduras – as they simply manhandled our midfield and controlled the pace in the first 50 minutes of this game.  Now give Pico and this Honduras team credit – they are the 3rd or 4th best team in this region – and I will guess they go thru as the 2nd place team in our group.  This Coach Pico is the same guy who was the darling of the World Cup last summer as the Costa Rican’s stormed thru to the knockout stages playing some inspired football.  His handprint was all over this team as they played with the same tenacious packed in defense quickly transitioning into attack.  Seriously they outplayed us for 70 minutes of this game and truly they were the team that looked like they would score in the run of play – not the US.  The US again relied on the old steady set play pieces to bail them out.  It used to be play good defense (which we don’t do anymore), counterattack with speed and overall hustle, and win on set pieces.  Well 1 out of 3 ain’t bad right?  Obviously it’s the first game of group play with 2 more easy opponents to iron out the offensive wrinkles against.  But if Altidore is just going to stand there and do nothing all game he might as well just stand on the bench.  His hold up play was ok – but he didn’t ONCE chase down a ball or apply any pressure on the Honduras defenders. Same for Dempsey –perhaps the greatest poacher the game and certainly the US game we have ever known.   His goals are ugly but he scores – but he doesn’t apply pressure, he doesn’t and has never hustled and run balls down.  He’s a creative genius who has a real knack for scoring, but he works best if he’s paired with a forward who actually makes runs and sprints towards the goal.  I missed Bedoya last night on the wing (he’s only the player playing at the highest level in Europe currently along with Guzan and was yet to be seen).  Listen Yedlin has GREAT speed but his offensive skills are atrocious – there’s a reason he’s a right back and not a midfielder at his club.   Hopefully Bedoya has recovered from his knee injury because having him at wing would definitely make a difference.  The good news is the US has 2 practice games coming up to try some new things and combinations – but this US teams needs to win this Gold Cup, and start playing beautiful futbol and playing like they did Monday night will not accomplish that.

The Indy 11 return home on Saturday night at the Mike to take on Carolina – on a five game non-losing streak, the 11 will look to take points from a team just 1 pt ahead of them in the table at 4th place.   So with the influx of Bradley, Giovincho and Altidore to Toronto, Kaka to Orlando,  Gerrard coming to LA, and now Chelsea legend Frank Lampard and soon Andrea Pirlo to NYCFC I have to admit I am watching more MLS this summer.  Both the darby’s last weekend Seattle vs Portland and NYCFC vs NY Red Bulls were great games to watch with fantastic EPL like crowds – now huge game Sunday 3 pm on ESPN as NYCFC faces Toronto in Lampard’s debut at  home.

7/06/15 US Women Win World Cup/US Men Gold Cup Tues Night//Indy 11 tie Cosmos

Wow so have you recovered yet from the stunning performance the US Ladies displayed against Japan to win the World Cup?  Indy’s own Lauren Cheney Holiday (Ben Davis High School and Carmel United) with a wonder strike.  What an unbelievable team performance and what an unbelievable run for Carli Lloyd who cemented her place in history as one of the biggest game hero’s in Women’s Soccer history not just a World Cup – but remember on top of her hat trick against Japan Sunday in Canada – Lloyd also scored the game winners vs Japan at the Olympics in 2012 and 2008.  He audacious shot from midfield (hear Andres Cantor do this goal justice) followed 2 perfectly executed set plays for goals off corners.  Seriously great coaching on that – two on the ground served corners, set plays for goals – that was stunning.  After getting off to a slow start in the group stages with this team – Jill Ellis properly adjusted her line-up to place that ever important holding defensive mid role to Morgan Brian, while freeing up Carli Lloyd to get into the attack as a high midfielder with one streaking forward.  She did a great job of getting speed and ball control on the field while maintaining the stingiest defense in the tournament. Congrats to Lloyd, the entire US Defense and Hope Solo for winning the golden glove (though I thought the English or German keepers were more deserving based on impressive saves in earlier rounds).  Still the US deserved this World Cup Championship and becomes the first women’s team to add the 3rd Star to their jersey. I thought this Women’s World Cup was great, Fox’s Coverage was superb and the best ever for a Women’s World Cup. I have to admit I was worried when Fox won the contract for both the men’s and women’s World Cups over ESPN- but if this tourney was any indication of their commitment to soccer with a 2 hour pre-game and hour long post game, and World Cup Late night and all the games across Fox, Fox Sports 1 + 2 and Fox Soccer and replayed over and over then we are in for a treat with Fox’s coverage.  Again Congrats to the USWMT, US Fans who showed up in Droves at the Game, and US Fans like you and me who on TV who made the US Women’s Cup final the Most Watched Soccer Game in the History of US Television (25 million+).  Soccer Nation We are Growing and this was another big step, but now we have to support our local teams, Indy 11, MLS, USL, and NWPSL we have to watch the games on TV – Gold Cup starting tonite, US plays Tues Night.

Speaking of Gold Cup –the US Men looked fine in their 4-0 dismantling of overmatched Guatemala in Nashville, Friday night. Now comes Gold Cup action starting this Tues night at 9:30 pm on Fox Sports 1, Gold Cup games from cities across the US will continue over the next few weeks culminating in what most assume will be a US vs Mexico or Costa Rico final.  The US needs to win this Gold Cup to assure they will play in the ever important Confederations Cup in Russia is 2017 before the 2018 World Cup.  Tune in for all the action and check the TV schedule below for Gold Cup times.

Also continue congrats to the Indy 11 as they tied the NY Cosmos at New York after thoroughly outplaying them in the first half.  The 11 return home this Sat Night to the Mike at 7:30 vs Carolina – also on Wish TV 8.

ESPN FC Insider Panel: Key players, predictions U.S. 2015 Gold Cup

On Tuesday night the U.S. men’s national team kicks off the 2015 Gold Cup, attempting to repeat as the tournament champs after bringing home the CONCACAF-based title in 2013.The U.S. and Mexico are the tournament favorites, and to meet El Tri in the likely Gold Cup title match, the Americans will need to navigate a group featuring pesky foes Honduras and Panama before advancing to the knockout stage.Which U.S. player will have the biggest impact on the team’s performance based on how well or poorly he plays? Which young player needs to step up the most for the U.S.? Which American has the most to prove? And which U.S. player would be the most important provisional squad call-up for the group stage? We assembled a panel of six ESPN USMNT experts — including FC Insiders Doug McIntyre, Adrian Melville and Kasey Keller, FC USMNT reporters Jeff Carlisle and Jason Davis, and Paul Carr from ESPN Stats & Info — to weigh in on these questions as well as to get their prediction on whether the U.S. will win the Gold Cup.

 1. Which U.S. player will have the biggest impact on the team’s performance based on how well or poorly he plays?

McIntyre: Michael Bradley. The newly anointed captain enters the tournament in the best form of his career. A dominant, defining performance that leads the U.S. to the title could establish Bradley as CONCACAF’s best player.

Melville: John Brooks. He leads the team with 25 clearances and 13 interceptions through the team’s eight friendlies in 2015. His communication with the rest of the backline will not only determine how often the U.S. outside backs can get forward and join the attack, but also assist in the team clearing opposing crosses and set-piece opportunities that opponents will look to create.

Keller: Bradley. How well he played against Holland and Germany was a big reason for the team’s success. If Bradley plays as well in Gold Cup, the U.S. will have a great chance.

Carlisle: Bradley. Everyone remembers how the World Cup wasn’t great for him, but he’s looked miles more comfortable at the tip of the [4-4-2 formation] diamond than he has previously. Granted, the games will be challenging in a different way than, say, the friendlies against Germany and the Netherlands were. But if he can continue to play at that level, than I see no reason why the U.S. can’t win it all.

Davis: Bradley. Everything flows through the midfielder, and if he’s not on top of his game, the United States has very little chance of lifting a second consecutive Gold Cup trophy.

Carr: Jozy Altidore. He leads the team with four goals since the 2014 World Cup. Just like last year, there isn’t a like-for-like replacement for him on this roster. While losing Altidore to injury or bad form may not drastically reduce U.S. title hopes, it would mean the Americans couldn’t play their ideal style with a target forward.

 2. Which young player (24 or younger) needs to step up the most in order for the U.S. to win the Gold Cup?

McIntyre: Brooks. The 22-year old center-back has started every game he’s been available for over the last year and, while he’s played well, he’s also made mistakes. There’s no room for error this month.

Melville: Aron Johannsson. The forward is the young player who needs to step up for the U.S., and he must provide forward depth behind the team’s top strikers. Altidore (hamstring) and Clint Dempsey (suspension) have both missed time leading up to the Gold Cup, and after producing just three shots in three 2015 friendly appearances, Johannsson will need to be prepared to provide significant minutes if the U.S. attack struggles early in the tournament.

Keller: I think this tournament will be won by the veterans, so wouldn’t target any particular young player as needing to step up for the U.S.

Carlisle: Brooks. He’s gradually improved his performances this year with the U.S., and has also found more consistency at club level. If he can begin to transfer that form to the U.S. with regularity, I think that will go a long way toward the Americans winning the title.

Davis: Brooks. The United States is counting a couple of young center-backs — the other being Ventura Alvarado — to hold down the fort in the back. Brooks is immensely talented, and this tournament could be the moment he solidifies himself as a starter.

Carr: DeAndre Yedlin. Yedlin, who turns 22 on Thursday, might be the fastest player in the tournament, and even though he’s completed only one of 19 crosses for the U.S. since the World Cup (an admittedly small sample size), at his peak he adds a dimension that few opponents will be able to handle.

 3. Which U.S. player has the most to prove?

McIntyre: Alvarado. Like Brooks, the Mexican-based center-back is just 22 years old, but with even less experience. Will he be up to the challenge if Klinsmann hands him a starting role?

Melville: Yedlin. The explosive right-sided player is at risk of falling behind Timmy Chandler at right-back, and the emergence of Gyasi Zardes as a right-sided midfielder could make it difficult for Yedlin to maintain his place in the team. Yedlin has appeared in all eight of the U.S. friendlies in 2015, and is recording significant tackles and interceptions defensively, but has something to prove on the attacking end.

Keller: I’ll look at this from the standpoint of players who would benefit the most from having a great Gold Cup. Brad Guzan could continue to prove he is the successor to Tim Howard if Tim doesn’t return to the fold, or if Brad can continue to show the coaching staff that even if Tim does return, he should be considered for the No. 1 spot. Also, if Yedlin has a stellar tournament, he could convince a team to take him on loan, where he could receive much-needed playing time at the club level.

Carlisle: Mix Diskerud. Is he a fringe player, or someone who can really cement his spot in the lineup? And where? Is he a shuttler in the diamond or holding mid? His work for NYCFC still seems too inconsistent, but Klinsmann is giving him every chance to prove himself for the U.S.

Davis: Altidore. Long a fixture in the team, Altidore nonetheless needs to prove that he can score goals in the U.S. setup on a regular basis, in part because of his aborted 2014 World Cup and disastrous experience at Sunderland.

Carr: Brooks. His five starts this year are the most of any U.S. center-back, but he hasn’t looked convincing. The U.S. conceded seven goals in his four games in Europe, though he did score against the Netherlands. A good tournament could cement his starting spot. A poor one could see him fall behind Besler, Tim Ream and possibly others on the depth chart.

 4. Which player (who didn’t make the final 23-man roster) would be the most important provisional squad call-up for the group stage?

McIntyre: Besler. I would’ve said Jordan Morris before he got injured. I could see Besler, who started all five games for the U.S. at last year’s World Cup and who has played well for Sporting KC lately, replacing Brooks if Brooks struggles or returns to Hertha Berlin early. But I don’t expect either of those things to happen.

Melville: Michael Orozco. I think Orozco’s versatility in defense could help the U.S. pressure more CONCACAF opponents higher up the field, and help the team win possession more often in its defensive half. While Orozco plays as a center-back with the U.S., his ability to play outside back and even defensive midfield at Puebla shows that he is capable of covering a lot of ground and could pressure opposing attacking midfielders, along with marking opposing forwards.

Carlisle: Alan Gordon. I think Gordon could be valuable as a late-game sub if the U.S. finds itself in need of a goal late in a game. He’s proved that time and again at club level with L.A. Galaxy, and he helped in the U.S. in that very fashion during a World Cup qualifier against Antigua and Barbuda. I also think the versatility of a Brek Shea could come in handy given that he’s seen time at both left back and left midfield for Orlando.

Davis: Juan Agudelo. The Revolution forward has a unique skill set in the U.S. forward pool. It’s easy to imagine that Jurgen Klinsmann will want those abilities on his bench if he needs a goal in a big game.

Carr: Besler. After a poor end to the 2014 season, he’s been rounding back into form this MLS season. He ranks in the top 10 in MLS interceptions and clearances, and Sporting Kansas City has allowed two goals in the last five games Besler has played. Besler could solidify an in-flux U.S. defense for the knockout stage.

 5. Which team will win the 2015 Gold Cup?

McIntyre: United States. They’re playing at home and coming in confident after four straight victories. Meantime, their main title threat, Mexico, is winless in seven and just lost star striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez (broken collarbone) for the tournament.

Melville: United States. The Americans have the depth and experience to win the Gold Cup. In the attack, the team has scored 19 goals in eight 2015 friendlies. Meanwhile, defensively the team is more focused on avoiding costly mistakes, and after conceding 10 goals after the 80th minute in 2014 post-World Cup friendlies, the team has conceded just three after the 80th minute in its eight 2015 friendlies.

 Keller: United States.

Carlisle: United States. The Americans have a ton of momentum and seem as comfortable in Klinsmann’s system as they have ever been. It helps that rivals Mexico will be short of full strength with Hector Moreno and Hernandez both out injured. Of course there is always a chance that one of Panama, Honduras and Costa Rica could sneak into the final, but regardless, I expect the U.S. to prevail.

Davis: United States. Mexico is extremely talented, but suffering from a lack of confidence. Costa Rica is good enough, but is missing several key players. It’s the Americans’ tournament to lose.

Carr: United States. Assuming the quarterfinal bracket plays out as expected, ESPN’s Soccer Power Index has the U.S. as a 49 percent title favorite, well ahead of second-best Mexico (33 percent). Playing at home, that seems about right.

With the CONCACAF Gold Cup set to kick off, ESPN FC writers Jeff Carlisle, Doug McIntyre, Jason Davis, Tom Marshall, Cesar Hernandez and Andrea Canales make their tournament predictions.

Who will win the Gold Cup?

Carlisle (@JeffreyCarlisle): United States

McIntyre (@DougMacESPN): United States

Davis (@davisjsn): United States

Marshall (@MexicoWorldCup): United States

Hernandez (@CesarHFootball)Mexico

Canales (@SoccerCanales): Costa Rica

07/02/15 US vs Japan in WC Finals 7 pm Sun on Fox, US Men Fri 7 pm FS1, Copa Finals Sat 4:30 pm, Indy 11 kickoff Fall Season

Ok lets start with this is the Best the US has played in years.  Huge player movement by coach Jan Ellis and the move of young stalwart Morgan Brian staying at Defensive mid with Indianapolis’ own Lauren (Cheney) Holiday along side and Carli Lloyd moving into the underneath forward position gave the US their best possession of the World Cup.  Save for a lucky (non Red Card call against US Defender Julie Johnston) and the subsequent forced miss of the Penalty shot by Julia Sasik (we call her Brats) the US completely dominated this game.  They controlled the midfield, they outshot the Germans, and defensively only gave up a couple of shots on goal.  The defensive work of the back 4 with Brian now protecting has led to 513 minutes of shutout soccer – its been the story of the tournament.  The story of the day – was the moves Ellis made to have the US playing their absolute best soccer as they reached the Semi-Finals. Of course the showdown vs Japan for the finals is still left and the US can look forward to payback vs the team that beat them in PKs in the finals in 2011 – but honestly they should beat this Japan team 2, 3 to zero.  Be sure to find a place to watch Sunday Night, 7 pm  – coverage starts at 6 pm on Fox.

So on the men’s side –we have the US Men with their last warm up vs Guatamala Friday night on Fox Sports 1- 7 pm, and the world’s top player Lionel Messi will be looking to bring his Argentina its first international championship when they play hosts Chile for the Copa America Championship Saturday night at 4:30 pm on beIn Sports. Cudos to the Indy 11 – who tied Mexican 1st Division side Monarcas Morelia 0-0 last weekend heading into first game of the Fall Season this Sunday at the NY Cosmos (7 pm on TV 8), before returning for a home date with Carolina on July 11 – 7:30 pm.  Carmel FC’ers be on the lookout for our first ever Carmel FC Float at the Carmel Fest Parade this Saturday at 10:30 am.

USA vs. Germany Women’s World Cup semi-final watched by 8.4 million

Posted on July 1, 2015 by Christopher Harris

FOX’s live coverage of the 2015 Women’s World Cup semi-final between the United States and Germany was viewed by 8.4 million million people watched the Tuesday night game. The match was shown live on the over-air FOX network from 7pm to 9pm ET, and is the most-watched broadcast on FOX since the April 1 edition of American Idol. While an average of 8.4 million people watched the broadcast, it peaked at 12.1 million between 8:30-8:45 p.m. ET.The 2015 USA-Germany semifinal is now the third most-watched women’s soccer match of all time. The numbers for USA-Germany beat FOX’s coverage of USA against China in the quarter-finals of the 2015 Women’s World Cup, which was watched by an audience of 5.7 million. The audience for USA-China on FOX (8.4 million) is +147% better than the audience for the USA’s semifinal match in 2011 vs. France on ESPN (3.4 million). USA-Germany is the most-watched World Cup semifinal match – men’s or women’s -ever in the U.S., breaking the mark set for the Germany-Italy 2006 World Cup semifinal (5.9 million).

Top ratings for USA vs. Germany:

  1. Kansas City and St Louis, 9.3
    3. Washington DC, 9.0
    4. Austin, 7.8
    5. Cincinnati and Columbus, 4.7

After defeating Germany, the US Women’s National Team plays this Sunday in the Women’s World Cup final against the winner of tonight’s semi-final between Japan and England. The question for FOX now is whether this Sunday’s Women’s World Cup Final can set a US record for the most-watched women’s soccer game ever. The current record stands at 17,975,000 that watched the 1999 Women’s World Cup Final when the US beat China on penalty kicks, which was televised live on ABC.
