Carmel FC celebrates their first ever time sending 2 teams to Regional Play after winning President’s Cup State Championships with a float in the Carmel Fest July 4th parade. Here the U12 girls, U11 Girls, U11 and 12 boys and more join in walking the parade route thru Carmel. Great Job folks!!
Ok lets start with this is the Best the US has played in years. Huge player movement by coach Jan Ellis and the move of young stalwart Morgan Brian staying at Defensive mid with Indianapolis’ own Lauren (Cheney) Holiday along side and Carli Lloyd moving into the underneath forward position gave the US their best possession of the World Cup. Save for a lucky (non Red Card call against US Defender Julie Johnston) and the subsequent forced miss of the Penalty shot by Julia Sasik (we call her Brats) the US completely dominated this game. They controlled the midfield, they outshot the Germans, and defensively only gave up a couple of shots on goal. The defensive work of the back 4 with Brian now protecting has led to 513 minutes of shutout soccer – its been the story of the tournament. The story of the day – was the moves Ellis made to have the US playing their absolute best soccer as they reached the Semi-Finals. Of course the showdown vs Japan for the finals is still left and the US can look forward to payback vs the team that beat them in PKs in the finals in 2011 – but honestly they should beat this Japan team 2, 3 to zero. Be sure to find a place to watch Sunday Night, 7 pm – coverage starts at 6 pm on Fox.
So on the men’s side –we have the US Men with their last warm up vs Guatamala Friday night on Fox Sports 1- 7 pm, and the world’s top player Lionel Messi will be looking to bring his Argentina its first international championship when they play hosts Chile for the Copa America Championship Saturday night at 4:30 pm on beIn Sports. Cudos to the Indy 11 – who tied Mexican 1st Division side Monarcas Morelia 0-0 last weekend heading into first game of the Fall Season this Sunday at the NY Cosmos (7 pm on TV 8), before returning for a home date with Carolina on July 11 – 7:30 pm. FOX’s live coverage of the 2015 Women’s World Cup semi-final between the United States and Germany was viewed by 8.4 million million people watched the Tuesday night game. The match was shown live on the over-air FOX network from 7pm to 9pm ET, and is the most-watched broadcast on FOX since the April 1 edition of American Idol. While an average of 8.4 million people watched the broadcast, it peaked at 12.1 million between 8:30-8:45 p.m. ET.The 2015 USA-Germany semifinal is now the third most-watched women’s soccer match of all time. The numbers for USA-Germany beat FOX’s coverage of USA against China in the quarter-finals of the 2015 Women’s World Cup, which was watched by an audience of 5.7 million. The audience for USA-China on FOX (8.4 million) is +147% better than the audience for the USA’s semifinal match in 2011 vs. France on ESPN (3.4 million). USA-Germany is the most-watched World Cup semifinal match – men’s or women’s -ever in the U.S., breaking the mark set for the Germany-Italy 2006 World Cup semifinal (5.9 million).

After defeating Germany, the US Women’s National Team plays this Sunday in the Women’s World Cup final against the winner of tonight’s semi-final between Japan and England. The question for FOX now is whether this Sunday’s Women’s World Cup Final can set a US record for the most-watched women’s soccer game ever. The current record stands at 17,975,000 that watched the 1999 Women’s World Cup Final when the US beat China on penalty kicks, which was televised live on ABC.

US Women Play China Friday Night in WWC Elite 8 on Fox, US Men Gold Cup Squad, COPA Quarters, Indy 11
So the US Ladies haven’t necessarily looked good but they continue to advance in the World Cup. I thought the offense had a little more spark especially in the 2nd half against a very chippy, somewhat dirty Columbia squad. Now they should have blown them out after Columbia went down to 10 players right after half – but Coach Jill Ellis continues to show she is no offensive mastermind as she hasn’t figured out how to unlock the US Attack. Do we see a 4/4/3 this week with Rapino and Indianapolis’ own Lauren Cheney Holiday out on yellow card accumulation? (see rant below) I for 1 think Holiday has had a horrible world cup so far – being forced into the #6 Defensive midfield role away from her normal #10 spot has not helped her. But her service on corners and free kicks and passing in general has been WAY off. Heck the entire team doesn’t seem able to connect more than 5 passes together. Not sure if it’s the turf – or if Coach Ellis hasn’t practiced 1 touch passing in the year she has been in charge. Either way the US should be ok vs China Friday Night, 7 pm on Fox – but I am not sure this squad can get by the France/Germany winner (Friday at 4 pm on Fox) in the Semis. Ok time for rant against THE STUPIDIST RULE IN SPORTS. The Yellow Card accumulation rule (it will cost the US Rapino and Holiday on Fri). The rule where if you get 2 yellow cards in 4 games – you miss the next game. Are you kidding? At least EUFA changed the rules this year to eliminate the rule after each round – listen a yellow card can just be a hard professional foul – getting 2 in 4 games is no big deal – especially with inconsistent refs. Some refs throw multiple cards for time wasting for heaven’s sakes, some for soft fouls or simulation. The bottom line is with inconsistent reffing getting 2 cards in 4 games is not difficult to do. 2 Yellows makes a red in a game no problem. But missing a semi-final or final of a World Cup for yellow cards is just ludicrous not to mention really really a bummer for the fans who pay good money to go to the games to see the BEST players play.
Moving to the men’s side The Copa America is getting down to the big games this week with Argentina vs Columbia Friday night, (see schedule below) and Klinsmann has set the US Men’s Gold Cup Roster. Interesting giving Timmy Chandler, who just stinks at right back, another set of games to prove he can’t play at this level. Hopefully his inclusion means Gonzalez is moving back in as a starter in the middle of defense. It will be interesting to see how GK Brad Guzan handles his role in goal as the starter – hopefully his play will lead to an offer for something bigger in the EPL –I still think he’s too good for Villa. The other big question I have is Wondo at forward – there are 10 forwards in the player pool I would take in front of him. Morris and Germany/Dutch game winner Bobby Wood just to name a couple. The Indy 11 are back to the field this Sunday 1:30 for a friendly vs Mexican 1st division squad Morelia before kicking off the fall season on July 5 at NYC and July 11th at home. CFC kids enjoy the summer off and watch lots of soccer (CFC goalies we start training Thurs nights)

So the US ladies finally put together a solid performance – I love having Alex and Abby at forward– they had some solid combinations up front and should have score a couple during the run of play. Of course former Gator Abby Wambach is a monster on set pieces and she came thru again at the end of the half. The US Defense continues to be the strength of the team with Johnston and Sauerbrunn just shutting things down in the middle. The US still needs to manufacture more goals and should be averaging at least 2 per game with the firepower they have. But considering Alex Morgan (simply one of the best players in the world) just now played ¾ of a game for the first time in 3 months – and had multiple chances is a good sign. There still seems be a lack of consistency in the midfield – and honestly Jill Ellis is still WAY too conservative for me. When Nigeria went down a player in the 70th minute the US had no excuse for not pushing forward for the safety clinching 2nd and 3rd goals – instead they inserted defenders for forwards and mids and looked just to hold on. Didn’t look like the best team in the world to be honest. That being said winning the group sends the US ladies thru with a much easier road which should take them to at least the Semi-Finals.
In local news the Indy 11 put up perhaps their best ever home victory with a 3-0 thrashing of Edmonton, the 2 straight wins under interim coach Tim Regan moves them from 11th to 5th overall in the NASL heading into the summer break. If you followed the blog over the weekend you know the Carmel FC U13 and U14 girls advanced to Regional play in the President’s Cup in St. Louis where the U13’s finished a solid 2-1 and 2nd in their group while the U14s gave up just 1 goal in group play to finish 0-1-2. Good jobs ladies – and congrats to the FC Pride U14 boys team for being the only Indiana team to advance to Nationals in July.

US Men Beat World Cup Champs 2-1, US Women vs Sweden Fri Night, U 20 Men Advance to Elite 8
USA 2 Germany 1 at Germany are you kidding me. The US men’s National Team thoroughly outplayed the Germans from about the 35 minute mark thru the end as they win another big game (yes a friendly but still – do you think Loew wanted to lose to his mentor?? – NO WAY) at the home of a top 5 in the world team. First forward Bobby Wood’s – (from California – playing in Germany’s 2nd division) goal last week beat the Netherland’s in the last minute, and now his spectacular goal in the 85th minute beat the Defending WORLD CUP CHAMPION Germany. And no this wasn’t just the B team – this was an A minus team for both squads – but honestly does this show the USA might just be a little deeper than Germany and the Dutch? Listen I will be the first to admit that I have questioned the mastermind of US coach Juergan Klinnsmann more than once – wondering if we are actually moving forward as a soccer playing country. But I have to admit – the last 2 games with young guys coming off the bench and young guys starting at defense – is beginning to show the US’s ability to take it to other teams – to possess and control and take the attack to some of the better teams in the world. Again its just a friendly but after winning on the road at Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, and now Germany we have to admit the US is doing things that we have rarely if ever done before. I have to assume the next FIFA rankings will have the US in the Top 15 for the first time in a while (that’s what beating # 1 and #5 in the World could do).
Now to the game- so Brad Guzan continues to show why he is ready to take the #1 gloves from Tim Howard. He made some big saves in both games this week – and the Gold Cup this summer will just give him more time to establish himself between the pipes for the US – while hopefully leading him to bigger opportunities in Europe than Aston Villa. Bradley continued to show his worth as an attacking mid – maybe Jurgy is right that Bradley should be an attacking mid not a d mid for the US. He certainly proved dangerous in the last game (when he was man of the match) and this game he had an assist and almost scored. Now the defense is another story – I thought the center back pairing of Brooks and Alvarado looked shaky at best, Timmy Chandler on the right was horrific again –(how he can be seen as better than Cameron at right back who starts in the EPL is beyond me). Gold cup is going to need to return to either Gonzalez and Belzer or some combination including at least 1 of them.
Meanwhile, the US Ladies face their biggest match in group play vs Sweden – former US coach now Swedish coach Pia Sundhage has started her mind games calling the US players out – It should make for an interesting battle – Friday Night 8 pm on Fox.

So the Carmel FC U13 Girls ran into a buzzsaw in their final game of Regional Pool play losing 3-0 on Sat am. They finished 2-1-0 and finished 2nd in their group overall. A fantastic job by coach Baco, the other coaches and the girls in representing our first Carmel FC teams into President’s Cup Regional play.
The U-14 girls finished up pool play with a hard fought 0-0 tie, coach Cecilia’s girls only gave up 1 goal across 3 games in pool play as they battled injuries down the stretch. The ladies finished up 0-2-1 overall and look to possibly move into MRL play next season.

Hard fought 1-0 loss for our CFC U14 Girls to the NWC Alliance Team from Ohio Friday morning. Now at 0-1-1 heading into their final game vs KHSC Mossinger from KY Sat at 10:30 am.
The Carmel FC U13 Girls won their 2nd game in Regional Pool play 2-1 vs Ohio’s Soccer Vision Academy behind goals from Olivia Fray (7th minute) and Libby Miller (37th minute). Now standing at 2-0-0 with a 4 to 1 goal differential they play again Sat at 8:30 am vs Illinois’ Strikers FV. The Championship game is Sunday AM.

Champions League Finals Sat, Women’s World Cup Starts, Indy 11 Fire Coaches, Carmel FC Teams to Regionals, US Men, Blatter Resigns + Games of the Week on TV
Wow so what a busy week of Soccer – off the field – The Indy 11 release head coach Juergen Sommer and place Ast Coach Tim Regan in charge – while FIFA’s embattled president Sepp Blatter was finally forced to resign amid a huge scandal. On the pitch – the Champions League Finals wrap up Saturday afternoon, June 6 @ 2 pm on Fox with Juventus and Barcelona matching up in a winner take all for the best club team in Europe. (more people worldwide will see this game than the Superbowl, World Series and NBA Finals combined). It’s the world’s top player Messi with Suarez (the biter), and Neymar up front against the wonderful defense of Juve with Goalkeeper extraordinaire Gigi Buffon, defender Chiellini, midfielders Pirlo and Progba and forwards Tevez and Morrato.
The Women’s World Cup kicks off the month long tourney in Canada on Saturday with games across the Fox Networks – the US starts its march on Monday at 7:30. Meanwhile the US men are in Europe for friendlies against the Netherlands – Fri 2:30 pm on ESPN and Germany Wed 2:30 pm Fox Sports 1, while the US U20’s are still alive in the U-20 World Cup (Fox Sports 1).

Indy Eleven fires coach Juergen Sommer

Juergen Sommer, the only head coach the Indy Eleven have ever known, was relieved of his duties on Tuesday.The Eleven have struggled mightily in their second season, sitting in last place with just one win in the team’s first eight league games this season.Indy also crashed out of the U.S. Open Cup, losing to third-tier expansion side Louisville City FC.”This is a very difficult day in Indy Eleven history, but a necessary day,” team president Peter Wilt said. “Juergen is Indiana soccer and he worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week to see this team be successful. We determined if Indy Eleven was going to go forward and get the best out of the players we have we needed to go in a different direction.”Assistant coach and former Major League soccer defender Tim Regan will take over on an interim basis. Kleberson, the team’s injured star, will serve as an assistant while he rehabs his Achilles injury the rest of the season.”Over time you’ll see a slightly different look,” Regan said. “But everybody has more to offer.”In naming him coach, Wilt cited Regan’s time playing for Bob Bradley — who Wilt considers the best American soccer coach — and using his philosophies as a key to the promotion.While Wilt said Regan will have every opportunity to become the permanent head coach, he noted this is a time for the team to explore new options as it moves forward.The firing of Sommer, which Wilt said was his decision, didn’t boil down to a single event. Over the past few weeks Sommer and Wilt had been communicating about the direction and progress of the team. Wilt felt with the additions to the roster this season there shouldn’t be a lack of production on the field — especially at home. Ultimately, it cost Sommer his job.A former U.S. national team goalkeeper and former Indiana University standout, Sommer played a key role in Carmel’s youth soccer setup before joining the Eleven. However, under his stead, Indy compiled an 8-17-13 overall record in all competitions.”It wasn’t quite good enough,” Regan said. “We have to make it better.”This year, goals have been hard to come by as the team copes without Kleberson pulling the strings in the midfield. The Brazilian World Cup winner has missed the entire season and remains out indefinitely.”This is a tough day for Indy Eleven,” team owner Ersal Ozdemir said in a press release. “I will continue to have a great amount of respect and support for Juergen, as nothing less is deserved following the contributions he made to the organization and the local soccer community that he cares about so deeply over these last two years.”The Eleven travel to Fort Lauderdale to face the Strikers on Saturday.

Jurgen Klinsmann says the U.S. national team’s experimental post-World Cup transition period is ending, and that’s bad news for three starters from the squad that reached the round of 16 in Brazil in 2014.Klinsmann left Matt Besler, Omar Gonzalez and Graham Zusi off the 22-man roster he named Sunday for friendlies at the Netherlands on June 5 (2:30 p.m. ET, ESPN/WatchESPN) and five days later in Germany against the defending world champs.Fellow veterans Jozy Altidore (hamstring) and Alejandro Bedoya (knee) are also missing, as is captain Clint Dempsey, who is expecting his fourth child next month. Other regulars (Geoff Cameron, Greg Garza) were excused so they could look after minor injuries.But central defenders Besler and Gonzalez and midfielder Zusi each played in their most-recent game at club level, and a U.S. Soccer spokesman confirmed their absences came down to a coaching decision.With several of the 13 new players that Klinsmann has auditioned in the 10 games since the Americans were eliminated in the Round of 16 last summer now entrenched, it seems that the trio, who started nine games between them in Brazil, are on the outside looking in ahead of July’s CONCACAF Gold Cup.Eight players on the roster have 10 caps or fewer, including promising young center-backs Ventura Alvarado and John Brooks.
Doug McIntyre is a staff writer for ESPN It’s not often that the U.S. U-20 and U-23 national teams are simultaneously involved in different tournaments on separate, far-flung continents. So if you’ve been too busy following the shenanigans at FIFA to catch the games (because what else would a normal person be doing at 3 a.m. during the week?) and can’t identify the top American players, don’t fret. We’ve got you covered.With wins against Myanmar and New Zealand, the U-20s are heading to the second round of a World Cup for the first time since 2007. (They’ll meet Ukraine in the Group A finale early Friday ET.) And while the heavily shorthanded U-23s struggled while going 2-2 in group-stage play at the Toulon Tournament, they did manage an impressive victory over the Netherlands and, thanks to France’s 4-0 win over the Dutch, miraculously advanced to the third-place playoff on Sunday. For both squads, there were several notable individual performances. Here’s the rundown:
Tab Ramos’ team took its opener against Myanmar, but wasn’t particularly sharp in the 2-1, comeback victory. So Ramos made four changes to his lineup before facing the hosts — one by necessity, after forward Maki Tall broke a toe, ruling him out of the rest of the competition. All of the moves paid off in the 4-0 win. LA Galaxy striker Bradford Jamieson replaced Tall up front and opened the scoring for the Yanks. After coming on as a substitute and showing flashes of his vast potential against Myanmar, ballyhooed Arsenal prospect Gedion Zelalem made his first U.S. start and quickly showed what all the fuss is about. Zelalem set up the Americans’ third goal, which was scored, emphatically, by another lineup newcomer in Paul Arriola, who has made more than 30 first-team appearances for Liga MX club Tijuana. And Dutch-based Desevio Payne, who appeared in two Eredivisie games for Groningen last season, showed solid technical ability and tactical awareness after spelling Shaq Moore (who picked up a yellow card in the first match) at full-back.As well as the replacements fared in the rout, Emerson Hyndman and Rubio Rubin have been the U-20s best players through two matches. One might have expected as much: In addition to being the two most experienced players on the squad (Hyndman played in nine games for Fulham in 2014-15, while Rubin made 21 league starts for Utrecht), they’re also the only ones boasting senior team caps. Hyndman was the lone American to score in both games and was generally everywhere. The clever Texan’s box-to-box game is similar to a young Michael Bradley’s, even if the diminutive Hyndman is less of a physical presence. His late runs into the box are very Bradleyesque, though, and his silky first touch probably makes him more naturally gifted going forward.
Rubin, meantime, set up Hyndman’s winner against Myanmar, then scored himself against New Zealand. Production aside, Rubin looked like a man against boys at times. He’s strong, good at holding the ball up and bringing teammates into the play, and an excellent passer. (If there’s one knock against him, it might be that he’s not quite selfish enough.) Those aren’t qualities often seen in American strikers.
Zelalem really does looks like the real deal so far, and not because of the audacious nutmeg or Rabona kick he pulled off against the Kiwis, fun to watch as those were. No, the thing that stands out most about Zelalem’s game is his ability to relieve pressure and get his team out of trouble when necessary. Zelalem makes it look easy. His calmness on the ball in tight spaces has drawn comparisons to former American World Cup captain Claudio Reyna, and it gives this U.S. team a dimension few at any level have had in the past. Zelalem can also play the killer final pass. He’s only going to get better as his comfort with his new teammates improves.
Tottenham prospect Cameron Carter-Vickers has been the MVP of the back line. The 17-year-old man-child’s positioning has been nearly flawless through two games, and he’s been unbeatable in the air. (He also picked up an assist on Tall’s tally in the opener.) Matt Miazga, Carter-Vickers’ partner in central defense, has also been dominant. But the 6-foot-3 New York Red Bulls starter has occasionally allowed his emotions to get the better of him after being whistled for fouls, and he’s sitting on a yellow heading into the group-stage finale.
U-23s at Toulon Tournament
For the U-23s, senior team regulars Julian Green and Jordan Morris have been the standouts on a squad that is far from full strength. Club commitments prevented coach Andi Herzog from securing the release of more than a dozen players, meaning the ones he did get hadn’t been playing much heading into the tournament. The rust was obvious during last week’s forgettable first half against France, in which Les Bleus jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Morris clawed one back later on, but it wasn’t a good showing. The Yanks rebounded well against the Netherlands but couldn’t build on it, rounding out their group schedule with a loss to CONCACAF rival Costa Rica and a narrow win versus Qatar. Luckily the Americans received a big assist from France, whose win over the Netherlands kept the U.S. alive.
Morris, one of just two college players on the roster, continues to grow. The fast, physical Stanford man has been a handful for opposing defenders throughout the tournament and looked sharp and confident in every match. His consistency also has been impressive, even as he’s jumped back and forth between the senior team and the U-23s over the last three months. It was no surprise then that Morris was added to the senior squad’s roster for Friday’s marquee friendly against the Netherlands (2:30 p.m. ET, ESPN/WatchESPN). He remains very much in contention for a Gold Cup spot. Green won’t join Morris in Amsterdam, but Toulon has been valuable for the German-American, too. The 19-year-old, who, like Morris, has already scored at senior level, hasn’t played one first-team minute for club or country this calendar year. So getting four starts in France (he was the only American in Herzog’s XI for all four group games) has been huge. Green struggled against France, but he got better as the tournament went on, scoring the winner against Qatar off a spectacular first-half volley. That can’t hurt his confidence going into next season, whatever club he ends up with following his one-season loan to Hamburg.Herzog’s squad in Toulon will likely bear little resemblance to the one that will try to qualify for the 2016 Olympics later this year. That may have been the case anyway given the number of key players who were unavailable (including World Cup veterans John Brooks and DeAndre Yedlin), but it’s almost guaranteed now after several Yanks have so far failed to help themselves in France. Goalkeeper Cody Cropper has struggled mightily, losing his place over the last two games. Shane O’Neill, Will Packwood and Marc Pelosi have underwhelmed, too, although Packwood, who had a shocker versus France, redeemed himself somewhat with a well-taken goal against the Dutch.Two players who have boosted their stock are Fatai Alashe and Jerome Kiesewetter. FIFA SCANDAL, Blatter Re-election, Cup Finals, Women’s World Cup
Saying FIFA isn’t Crooked – that’s kind of like saying the Olympic Committee isn’t a scam right? And how about in the midst of a scandal, arrests, and investigation the same president who has been in charge during all of this scandal being re-elected for a 5th term? Good to see the more things change the more things stay the same at FIFA and in World Soccer. It will be interesting to see what comes out of the investigation and if they can pin anything on Sepp Blatter and force him to step down at some point. Ok back to the pitch – Europe has a host of Cup games with the FA Cup Final Sat 12:30 at Wembley on Fox, the Spanish, German’s and French all have Cup Finals as well on Saturday as we build to the Champions League Final between Barcelona and Juventus Saturday, June 6 @ 2:45 on Fox.
